Garbage Dumps and Food Habit of Animals

19-01-2019

Garbage dumps here and there in any city are useful as well as harmful to a great extent. If sorted properly this waste can turn into useful manure, but if not it can affect animal life, as it contains many harmful chemicals. Various studies have proved that this unwanted waste is changing the food habits of animals. Let’s have a look at how and what is exactly affecting nature.

Plastic waste is the hot topic basically which is proving hazardous to health and reproductive pattern of animals. Different chemicals which are produced from this are creating environmental pollution too. And the wild animals unknowingly eat all this and their population is affected by this intake and it is somehow causing their extinction. This extinction is affecting the food chain and the ecosystem is also disturbed due to it. The decline in the number of some species and increase in the other is the result, and the prey which is dependent on them also has to look for other options.

Different animals use different food organs for the consumption of food and this is the reason that some which have well-defined organs are able to separate eatable items from harmful waste. Those which have long beaks or other organs could pull the food items and are saved from this unnecessary consumption. And the researchers have identified that gulpers come more in contact with these unnecessary waste than the handlers and peckers.

Besides wildlife, the animals in the ocean are also affected by these wastes as our water places are filled by this. Jellyfishes or other sea animals that are consuming the lower group of animals like small fishes that are accidentally consuming plastic resins are affecting their food habits and this affects their health. So it very important that before pouring waste in these dumps it should be properly sorted.
